Takoda Therapies

About us

Our story. The people. Told in their words.

A deep dive into Camp Fiona and Takoda Therapies — how we got here, who is on the board, and why Jerry Reyes’s smile tells the story.

Our Story

Every day I feel the path we are on is guided. In 2019, I planned to start Camp Fiona for Special Needs children and eventually move into service dogs as the second phase of the nonprofit. When I attended the University of Tennessee, I was enrolled in a class for special needs that included a trip to Camp Koinonia. This allowed me to see if I could do this for the rest of my life. That was the concept we wanted to follow which would give students at the university an opportunity like I experienced.

In Texas, there is an 8–9 year waiting list to get therapy benefits from Medicaid. I wanted to provide them the opportunity to attend the camp first before others currently enrolled in state programs were allowed to participate. Camp Fiona would follow then in a few years by training service dogs. COVID prevented us from moving forward. In 2024, the vision is still on the camp helping special needs children but also shifting our focus to PTSD and Vets. I realize now how the service dogs would help benefit both and allow us to take on stress, behaviors, addictions and trauma emotions.

I was guided to develop a new type of service dog to work with Special Needs which worked so well it shifted my thinking to PTSD too. The rest is history and now currently working with Special Needs having many areas of focus & PTSD using a combination of Therapeutic Recreation and Service Dogs to teach Biofeedback training. The combination will help you stop the fight/flight cascade as well as other areas of different types of situational triggers in social situations. I used to think we would provide a service dog to everyone. I changed that thinking. Not everyone will need one when we finish. A dog, if it happens, is tailored to special cases.

We will be using other techniques — meditation and hypnosis therapy — to help combat the trauma that does not let us sleep at night or function in everyday life. Meditation is done through RT breathing practice and headband equipment. It is an important part of the program with RT and hypnotherapy. When we head to phase 3, the tics and triggers work is done with RT, meditation, and hypnotherapy — in association with Takoda Therapies and Mayan Spirit. No extra cost. That work leads toward phase 5, and it makes more sense later. Past life regression is purely your choice, and it is a separate fee. Some will want to come in for therapy to reengage in military activities, learning how to control the stress with biofeedback training, but not get a service dog.

What matters to us is that for the first time everyone in your life truly knows how you feel. The dog never lies and will hold you accountable for you each day. The dogs do work but if you are wondering they also love very much too! The best part about it is you become happier and no more fake smiles. Jerry Reyes’s smile tells the story.

Full disclosure

I have currently been doing the (AAT) with RT live since February 2023 (debut Sept 2022) and have learned that learning never stops. I have been doing RT for almost 10 years and felt nothing could get me over the hump to the next level until I was shown the way by God. Therefore I want to give a shout out to the Lord above for showing me the way. Without him guiding me I would not have been able to design these dogs to do what they do or have an open mind to listen. Also, RT is amazing but the (AAT) dogs steal the show. You can not do this without them! No machine can distinguish what they have to do in a blink of an eye — two to three hundredths of a second — and give the correct response over and over.

The dogs are detection dogs. They also assist you in real time. That is AAT — activity-assisted therapy.

Full Disclosure: Also I just learned that most of what I was shown through God, Stephen Porges mentions in his paper in July/August of 2025. He also talks about his (PVT) Polyvagal Theory in 1994. It's nice that someone talks about what I completely created through God and could have not known due to I started this in 2022. It's proof He does exist and has not given up on His children. There are many things Mr. Porges does not know, however I do need to give him a shout out on concepts which more or less mention to some degree 50–60% of it. The concept of implementation through 5 phases is all mine though with God’s guidance. 100%. The dog part and the interactions with the dogs in real time all mine with God’s guidance. My point is even though they mention to some variation they have no means to be able to recreate over and over again. They needed the catalyst and the correct therapy to make it work. I'm so proud to be the one that lets Recreation Therapy shine with one of a kind dogs and God leading the way. (This is my story and told as such.)

Meet the team

Chris Griffin

President, CEO, CTRS, Biofeedback Dog Trainer and Cofounder · Licensed therapist · VA CCN / TriWest, Region 4

Chris Griffin

Chris has advocated for helping Special Needs kids and adults for a good part of his life. He has struggled with a learning disability and a childhood drowning traumatic experience himself for his entire life and truly understands what being different feels like in an individual. I'm a Certified Recreation Specialist and learning to combine the service dog I created with my therapy is truly amazing. I can't wait to show the world this truly amazing thing God has shown me. I myself am a better man and a husband. I want everyone to feel free again like we were intended to be! Chris is the certified therapist at Takoda Therapies — certified in his field, which counts as licensed; North Carolina is the only state that licenses this work — and a VA Community Care Network provider through TriWest, Region 4. Authorized care is active. Public directory listing may follow.

Jerry Reyes

Secretary of the Board, Cofounder & USMC Disabled Veteran

Jerry Reyes

I struggle with anxiety and depression. I am a Gulf War veteran. Working with Chris and his dogs Princess Leia and Han Solo have been an amazing adventure. In the past years of my life I have been only able to get three maybe four hours of sleep and I couldn't control the trauma at night. Now I get 7 to 8 hours of sleep working with these dogs and getting happier every day. They make me battle my struggles through biofeedback but it has been defiantly worth it for me and my family. In dogs I trust!! As well as the motto of Camp Fiona “Trust is a Must” before real healing can happen.

Brian Burgess

Vice President of the Board, USMC Retired & Dog Trainer

Brian Burgess

Brian has just recently retired from the USMC from 25 years of service. He has extensively trained dogs to detect in the field of battle. He has agreed to assist with guidance from the board and any help with training once it is established. He would like to be an advocate to others getting out of the Military trying to reconnect to civilian life. The new age dogs are the way forward to helping Military Vets transition from military life to civilian life dealing with PTSD. The dogs also give reassurance to you, wife, family members and profession that when you say you're fine you are fine. No more wondering because the dogs let everyone know how you really are doing.
